﻿Hello, welcome to architecture understanding the world around us. Today we are going to be planning our final piece. And this is lesson number 13 of 16. So today we are going to think about the artists that we have looked at throughout the project, we're going to understand how their artwork can influence our own artwork, and what skills we have gained that can help us create a architecture inspired final piece of work. So let's start by thinking about the artists that we've looked at and the skills that we have developed through looking at those artists. What I'd like you to do is I'd like you to make a spider diagram or a mind map. In the middle of that diagram, you're going to write the words skills, then you're going to just from memory, think the artists that you've looked at, and the skills that you've developed to do by looking at those artists. For example, we have looked at the artist John Piper. And the skills we have developed, were making tea staining. And there were quite a few others as well. But you might have learned some other skills while you're working, because you've been doing it slightly different to how we've been doing it, or how I've been doing it because of the different resources that you've had. So think of the skills that you've developed, and write them as a mind map so you can recap what you know, ready to start planning your final piece. Pause the video, go and spend five to 10 minutes making your mind map and then come back. Remember, presentation is always key. So try and make it a nicely presented Mind Map. Okay, so I'm just going to go through with you, the artists that we've looked at, and the skills that I have embedded into the lessons, where we looked at those artists through the demonstrations and examples and the instructions that we've been getting. So first we looked at the artist John Piper, the skills that we were trying to develop there, were adding highlights. So remember we were using either a watered down paint, or a white chalk pen or a gel pen, or anything that you had to hand at home, or wherever you are to make some kind of white medium to add some highlights. We were using expressive mark making, because we weren't using pencils. We weren't doing fine details. We were using paint brushes, and again, whatever we had to hand to kind of really quickly add those marks. We're using alternative resources, like tea and coffee and charcoal. We did tea staining. So we looked at ageing, the back of our page and having a base colour and drawing from observation. So looking at the thing that we're drawing, and drawing again, we need to think about how you look at the object that you're drawing rather than drawing from memory or from your imagination. The next artist we looked at was the artists Sunga Park for this artists task we did an ink and wash drawing. That was when you applied ink to the page and use water to make the ink disperse. We created tone using that ink adding more in less water. We added fine details over the top using a pencil or fine liner pen. And we thought about composition as well. So the placement of the image on the page after that, we explored the artists Minty Sainsbury and we looked at her really detailed architectural drawings, we blended with pencil we drew from observation. So again, it's drawing while looking and making sure that what you draw is accurate to what you can see. We did the transfer and trace technique but we've scribbled on the back of the page flipped it over, so we can trace around to get those really accurate proportions. We did some shading and highlighting using pencils and rubbers. And we looked at adding a range of tone from the tonal scale so the really, really dark tones and the light white tones as well. After that, we looked at Stephen Wiltshire. Stephen Wiltshire was the artists that did the vast landscapes, the city scapes from his imagination. So with this artists we discovered how to use mark making to add tone so cross hatching line stippling. We looked at the foreground, the background and the middle ground. So how can we give the impression of depth In our work, we did some line drawing by that I mean, there wasn't shading, and it was cross hatching map making. We looked at different viewpoints. So a bird's eye aerial view and a face on view. And we looked at drawing from our imagination. So before this point we were all about drawing from observation during exactly what we saw. When we looked at Stephen Wiltshire, we drew from our imagination. So we completely made it up as we went along. After Stephen Wiltshire, we looked at Lucy Jones, where we really went free with our expressive mark making. We did some mono printing using oil pencils. We looked at using alternative resources again, so different teas or coffees or just what can you supplement for what I said so I said use gouache paints, and we discussed what else you could use if you didn't have that. We used collage we used mixed media where you put more than one resource together in that one artwork, so whether you have got a collage animal print and oil pastel drawing as that one image that's a mixed media image, and we had to get blending oil pastels as well. Then we looked at the artists Roa. Roa was the one who drew the giant paintings on the side of buildings. And then we looked at creating line with tone, mark making to create form. So really curving guidelines to show how something moves and how something is curved. We looked at sketching an outline very carefully. And we looked at mark making to create texture as well. So moving on, we're going to think about our composition for our final piece so far, but the skills that we've developed and what we can bring to our final piece, and now we're going to think about the order of which it's going to be placed as a final piece. So what is composition? In our composition is the placement or the order of the visual elements. Think of it as the recipe and all of the ingredients in a work of art. For example, if I had an artwork, I could have a house, and that'd be one ingredient, the sky and some clouds. That's another ingredient. A tree is another ingredient, and then the grass in the foreground, and that's another ingredient, and you put them all together and that makes the artwork that makes the recipe what I want you to do is I want you to sketch out your compositions. So you can see here that I've done some very quick and rough sketches. I have drawn different compositions, so I can start to put them together and start to get an idea of how I want my work to look. I've got one example where I've got four drawings, and I've put four drawings for different mediums. So here I could have a charcoal drawing, a pencil drawing, a painting, and a mono print. My next one I've decided that I'm going to do building with a completely black background. So I'm thinking about negative space, or I'm thinking about how I can fill that space and how I can work with that composition. And I've also added the different mediums that I could use. The next one, I've got a completely mixed medium piece of work so I've got the house, I've done the roof as watercolour. The outline is a simple line drawing and I'm going to use an ink and wash there as well. I've moved on and I've done some more that I've started to refine. So the first one, this one, they're very quick sketches with quite loose ideas. The next one, again, they're quite quick sketches, but I'm starting to bring together my ideas and be a little bit more specific. When you've done your sketches do four or five sketches, your sixth sketch. So once you've done your four or five sketches, your last sketch is going to be more of a complete idea. Please do not try and draw a final piece now it's just a sketch with some labelling of what your ideas could be. So you can see that I've decided I'm going to do some collage, I'm going to have a textured background, I've not quite decided what that texture backgrounds going to be yet, but I know I'm going to have a textured background. And I know that certain elements on that building is going to be mark making. I've chose from the very start, I've chose that my final piece is going to carry on from the building that I've been drawing throughout the project. You can do anything you like. So if you'd like to go out and take some photographs, before you plan your final piece, or know where you're going to take your photographs of as you plan out your final piece, where you can look on the internet some images that you might want to take inspiration from, then that's fine too. You're going to spend the next 15 to 20 minutes, planning out and sketching your final piece. But don't draw your final piece, just sketching the plan for your final piece. So now you should have a comprehensive sketch and an idea of what you want to do for your final piece, you can start to now make plans for how you're going to do it and how you're going to bring it into realisation. How it's going to become your final piece. Start with a spider diagram. As always, in the middle of the spider diagram, I'm going to write the word architecture, the project. From there, you can write the word size, and you can think about the different sizes of work you can do. Would you like to be huge? If it is huge why can you make it huge? Do you have those spaces? Do you have those resources? Are you going to be able to fit the correct detail? Do you have the time to make it huge? Do you want it to be really small, if it's really small. Do you have the ability to do such small details? Are you going to be able to paint? Do you have the right size paintbrush to do such a small piece of work? Is it going to be medium size? Would you like to challenge yourself or stretch yourself in any other way? Subject, what is it you're going to draw? So you've sketched it out and you've thought about it. But what is it that you're going to draw in terms of do you have an image that you're going to draw from? Are you going to go to the place and look at it visually? Are you going to draw it from your imagination? What is it that you're going to draw? Media, what types of materials are you going to use to draw with or paint with or make a mixed media collage with? Do you have them to hand? Where can you get them from if you don't? Colours, is it going to be bright and colourful? Is it going to be grey? Is it going to be simple? I can have a simplified colour palette like Stephen Wiltshire or have a very bright and bold colour palette like Lucy Jones. What kinds of colours are you going to add into your final piece? And skills this is an important one. Do you have the skills? Do you need to practise the skills? Do you need to challenge yourself more? How does this work to be your final piece? So all of this is a spider diagram. This is you showcasing all of the skills that we've developed throughout this project. So the skills is the big one. If you're doing a collage, have you done any collages, the college that we did, was that your best piece of work, because remember, when you're making a final piece, you really want to be showcasing your best work and what you can do best, but also what you've enjoyed the most. So don't write down I'm going to do a pencil drawing. If you don't enjoy pencil drawing. If you want to practise more than that's great, but you will really enjoy making your work. So think about all these things. Spend the next 10 to 15 minutes, creating a spider diagram and considering all of those things, remember to present your spider diagram well, remember your spelling and your grammar. And remember your neat handwriting as well. Next lesson, we're going to be putting together our composition and we're going to be creating our final piece.
