﻿- Hello and welcome everyone to this pop art project. The first lesson on the artist Chila Kumari Burman. So please remember to complete your intro quiz. We will be looking at the artist Chila Kumari Burman. We will also be looking at Chila Kumari Burman's artwork. You will complete a collage for your activity. And then you will complete an exit quiz. So for today's lesson you will need a sketch book, some colouring materials such as pens and crayons, or felt tip pens, a range of different collage materials, a pair of scissors, and a glue stick. So it's time to gather up all your equipment and materials for this lesson. Look for a variety of magazine pages, junk mail, and packaging that could be used for making your collage. So, pause the video to complete your task. Welcome back. So your keywords today: Mixed media, a type of visual art in which more than one medium or materials has been used. Collage, a picture in which different materials or objects, such as paper, cloth, or photographs are stuck together. In this lesson, you will learn about the life of artist Chila Kumari Burman, what she produces and why, and how to present an artist research page in your sketchbook. So I'm now going to give you some information about the artist. Whilst I'm doing this, I would like you to write down some notes, which you will use later on in your collage. So introduction to the artist. Chila Kumari Burman was born in 1957 in Bootle near Liverpool. She is part of the Pop Art Genre, and she works across a wide variety of media. What do you think that means? Excellent. Well done. So she doesn't just focus on one type of media. She likes to use lots of different types of media in her artwork. Okay. So now this is introduction to her artwork. So she classes herself as a multi-media, mixed-media artist. So she uses print, collage, and film along with many other different types of media. She enjoys combining her Indian roots with popular culture. So her parents originated from Punjab in India. Her work often has a political, personal, and cultural element to them. And she likes to combine unexpected styles and techniques in her pieces. And you'll see this in the next slide when we look at some of her artwork. So she's very experimental and she doesn't give herself any restrictions or boundaries. So these are three examples of Chila Kumari Burman's work. So this first one is called "Auto-Portrait". Now this is made up of 28 self-portraits. Now, what does self-portrait mean? Well done if you said images of herself. Now, this particular piece of work showcases different sides of her personality. Now`, the second picture is called "Churning Curds", which are mixed media collage. What can you see in this picture? Okay. So well done. There is a big ice cream and you can see an image of a tiger. So as we mentioned before, a lot of her work is personal to her. Now when her father came over from India, he struggled to get work, so he ended buying an ice cream van. And on top of the ice cream van was a big tiger. Now this third image is also of an ice cream. Now you will notice the ice cream plays a big part in Chila Kumari's artwork. So this is a big scale sculpture of an ice cream. Again, it is mixed media, and it is decorated in fluorescent paint and lots of glitter mixed with lots of different types of treasures, and gems, and jewellery which she likes collecting. So, what I'd like you to do now, I want you to choose your favourite piece of artwork by Chila Kumari Burman. So I would like you to write down your answers and justify them in your notebook. So explain why you like them. So pause the video to complete your task. So, Chila Kumari Burman's work is a reflection of her life experience. Is that true or is that false? Well done. The answer is true. Okay. So now what I'd like you to do is to sketch out your ideas for your collage. So you are going to present the information that you noted down about the artist in your sketchbook, but you can create a little plan. So think about where your information is going to go. So on your sketchbook page, make a plan for how you will visually present information on Chila Kumari Burman and her artwork. Consider the dates, the places, what she's known for, and the kind of work she produces. The suggested technique for the sketchbook task will be collage using magazines and found papers. So plan your task. So pause the video to complete. Welcome back. So now it's your turn to create your collage in the style of the artist Chila Kumari Burman. Use a variety of media and different types of materials, including text, and remember to have fun. Be experimental, and I hope you enjoy this task. Okay. So welcome back everyone. So now it's time for us to really be experimental and have fun with the information to create our artist research page. So during the lesson, I did ask you to take some notes, which would help you with this final activity. So what I've done to help you out, just in case you were struggling, or you haven't got lots of information, I have written some pointers down, which you can copy to add to your artist research page. Okay? So the first thing that I wrote was "Born in Bootle, Liverpool, 1957," but that's one of the things that I am going to add to my artist research page. Well done if you wrote that down. If you haven't, maybe you can note this down now. Okay. So another important thing that I picked out from the lesson was that she described herself as a Punjabi Liverpudlian. Okay. So I'm gonna do another couple of things. Her parents originated from Punjab, and I think that was really important, because she actually incorporated her Indian roots with popular culture in a lot of her work. So I've actually wrote the other as a separate point. So, "Combines her Indian roots with popular culture." So again, well done if that was one of the things that you wrote down in your notes. And then I'm just going to add two more things. I think this one was quite important because she uses lots of different things in her artwork, a lot of the things that she collects, what she describes as found treasures. Okay? And... The final thing I'm going to show you is "mixed media, stroke, multimedia artist." So as we've discussed previously, Chila Kumari Burman Singh doesn't just use one type of technique or material when she does her work. She often combines different types of materials. Okay? Right. So those are some of the points. If you had some of them, well done. You may even have more information, which is even better. Okay? So what I'm going to start doing now, okay, is to start arranging the information that I have on my page. So before I started, I was having a little rummage around to try and find paper and other things that I could use to do collage with. So as you can see here, okay, this one's packaging, that's just foil from another bit of packaging, I've got some scrap paper and magazines. And then I also found, 'cause I also like to collect things, I've got some shiny paper, I've got little bits of flower cutouts. These are really great and they're not that expensive. You can get like packs of them. These are like a washi tapes for the sticky on the back. So I will probably use some of them things. I've got little gems. And then it's just a box full of just little bits of scraps, which I think I will use later to decorate. So what I've started to do is cut out shapes and start adding information. So on the foil paper, I've got some sort of shiny metallic pens, which I have used on her, which works quite nice, but felt tip pens would be fine. So I've started cutting out shapes and writing some key bits of information about Chila Kumari Burman Singh. So I've just done a couple of things at the moment, just to give you an idea and then you'll see the final outcome after this demonstration. So I've put "mixed media". I've got "1957". I've got "Chila Kumari Burman Singh". Obviously, we need to know who this information is about. And then I've just started cutting some other shapes out which I could then add information to. So you may wish to put something in the background first, like cutout shapes and overlay it. Or you can arrange your information and then within the spaces you can add decorative detail. Okay? So... What I've done here, I've cut out some triangles, quite tapered, thin triangles, which acts sort of like arrows. So this is one way that you can arrange things. So you could have the artist's name and then have arrows or some sort of arms coming off where you could then put your information. I've got "mixed media," "1957," and then you could have other bits of information arranged. So that's one way of doing it. Okay? But like I said, because this is your work, you obviously need to think about what you prefer. So you can really have fun and play around. So these arrows maybe... I could arrange them like this perhaps. So I've kept the shapes similar to the shapes that I've seen in pop art works. So we've got big oval, sort of these spiky shapes here. Speech bubbles are quite good, 'cause you often see speech bubbles in pop art work. And then I've just cuts out some little patterns here. So it's all about having a little bit of fun and having a play with the information that you have. Are you going to do what I've done, and I've written information on shapes? And then are you going to stick them on? Are you going to do directly onto your page? She also mentioned bindis, which are little dots that ladies put on their foreheads. Now the red ones and often worn to represent that women are actually married. Sometimes people wear them for decorations. So it's like a jewellery when there's any celebrations or weddings. I can probably add some little gems to that because they tend to be quite pretty and decorative. Sometimes they're teardrop shape, sometimes they're circular shapes. So I thought some of them would be quite nice as well. And then we also know that her father had an ice cream van. An ice cream played a big part, not just in her life but in her artwork as well, okay? So what I've done there, I've just done a little collage of a lollipop and an ice cream. So as you can see, I've slowly started to put this page together. Obviously, there's still lots of information I can add. But I've already had a little bit of fun, you know, just thinking about what looks nice together, the arrangement, thinking about the colours, and then there's still lots of space where I can add further information too, as well. Okay? So... This activity now is for you to really be experimental. Explore. You know, there's no right or wrong. Enjoy it. Okay? So you can stop the video and then when you are ready, you can resume. Welcome back. So now we are going to do a little bit of an analysis about the work that we have created. So as you can see, this is my response to the artist Chila Kumari Burman. So this is my artist research page. So what do I think I have done well? So my WWW is my research page has been completed with lots of detail and colour. I believe that my design has been influenced by Chila Kumari Burman's work. Now, Even Better In. If I was to do this again, I would think about the font. So I have made some of the fonts stand out more by using paint. Now I think it would be better if I thought more carefully about the lettering font. So now it's time for you to do your evaluation. So I would like you to write two things that you think you have done well and two things that you think you could do better. The types of things you can think about is: does your work reflect the artist's work? Have you used lettering fonts in the style of pop art? Have you included things like ice creams in there? What about the colours? Do they reflect the colours of the artist's work? So two things that you think you have done well and two things that you could do better.
