﻿Hi, I'm really looking forward to our lesson today. I hope you are too. Before we get started, this is just a little reminder. We're here to support any approaches you might already be using and any work you might have already been set. We know that this lesson is going to be going out to so many different children and families. So, if you're not sure about anything or have any questions, then please do contact your usual therapy team. Today is the start of our unit on activities of daily living. And in our first session, we're going to be looking at what activities of daily living are, and this is sometimes shortened to ADLs. So, we're going to be looking at ADLs, what they are, and how well you think you can do some of your ADLs. Let's talk about our basic activities of daily living, also called ADLs. And the basic ADLs that we have to do every day include things such as bathing or showering, grooming, eating and feeding ourselves, going to the toilet, dressing and undressing, getting around, and also sleep and rest. Pause the video now to get the items you will need for today's lesson, which is paper and a pen or pencil. And there you can see children doing a range of ADLs. There's also a frog on the toilet. There's a Lego man having a shower. You can see a child brushing his teeth. They are, and he's in the bath. You can see a family having a meal and a little girl feeding herself. So those are some of our basic ADLs. For our first activity, I want you to use the list and the resources to see which of these basic ADLs you can do. Dress and undress yourself? Can you put on your socks and shoes? Can you take them off? What about feeding yourself? Using the toilet? Can you wash yourself? And are you able to brush your own teeth? Pause the video now to complete your task. Resume once you're finished. So we've looked at the basic ADLs, but what are the more complex activities of daily living? Well, these are called instrumental activities of daily living because they are more complex and because they're so much more complex, they allow us to be much more independent. And these include activities that we may need to do at home, at school, in the community, or in work environments. These are some of the more complex ADLs. So have a look at these and think what you are already doing and you could also maybe think of things you'd like to be doing. So at home, examples of more complex ADLs include preparing a meal, making your bed, cleaning your clothes, taking care of others, so younger siblings or pets, and just some home tasks that you'll need to do quite often. At school, we are looking at things like travelling. Can you travel to school on your own? Following instructions, being with your friends, doing your homework, playing, and then eating. And within the community, we're going to be looking at travelling around, going shopping, meeting friends, managing your money, using a phone, and also eating out. For our next activity, I want you to make a list of any complex activities of daily living that you can do by yourself. And here are just a few examples. Can you make a snack? Can you open snack bottles and packets? Can you buy something in a shop? Do you know how to use a phone? Do you feed the pets? And do you make your bed? Pause the video there to complete your task. Resume once you're finished. Okay, now you may ask, why is it important to be independent? You know, you may think actually, "I quite like someone doing everything for me. "I like being dressed. "I like them to just cook my meals for me." But actually, if you think about it, you probably really enjoy being able to make your own choices. And that means that when we're more independent and we're making our own choices, we feel more confident because we know that we can rely on ourselves a little bit more. We can do things exactly the way we like them to be done. We can also contribute to our household and the community and we can help others. And all of those skills make us really successful and really feel a part of our community.
