﻿Hello everybody. My name's Emma. And welcome to today's lesson. I'm looking forward to today's session and I hope you are too. I can't wait to get started. But before we do, just a quick reminder. We know this lesson is going out to so many different children and families. So if you're not sure or have any questions please do contact your child's school or usual speech and language therapy team. In today's session we're focusing on categorising. I'm going to share some ideas for games that you could play to work on categorising at home. And then I'm going to share some more activities that you could use to continue to work on your early reasoning and thinking skills. For today's session you'll need some containers, some toy animals, some clothes, some bathroom objects, and some kitchen objects. Before we get going then, you need to make sure that you're in a quiet place where you won't be disturbed for the lesson. Turn off any distractions or notifications that you might have running on your device, and then make sure that you and your adult are seated comfortably. When you're ready, let's begin. Okay, let's start by doing some talking and thinking about categorising. Early information processing skills include being able to find and collect relevant information, being able to use that information to sort, and then being able to classify or categorise. Pause the video here to get some objects or pictures of animals and clothes. Once you've got your pictures or objects come back to the video and press play to continue. Now that you've got your objects or pictures of items within two categories you need to provide two separate containers. We're going to work together to sort the objects and pictures of animals and clothes into these containers. By starting with two simple concepts that are easy to distinguish between, we'll be supporting our child to be more independent and experience success with this task. Here you can see a working example how sorting the objects or pictures of animals and clothes might work. On the left-hand side I've got my objects and pictures in one container and on the right, I've got my separate containers, one for my pictures or objects of animals and the other for the clothes. So pause the video here to complete your sorting activity at home. Once you finished come back to the video and press play to continue. Here are a few other suggestions for things that you could use to sort into categories. Once you get confident with sorting things into categories you can move on to sorting things within categories. For example, sorting animals into animals that live in the sea or on the land. There are a few other examples here too. As we know, the aim is for the child to complete these tasks with as much independence as possible over time. It's important that we work on basic concepts first before we move on to anything more abstract. So pause the video here to find some objects associated with the bathroom and the kitchen. In your pot, on the left-hand hand side, place all the objects associated with those two rooms. Then on the right-hand side have two separate containers with maybe a picture of the kitchen or a drawing of those rooms. Sort the objects on the left-hand side into the two containers on the right. Pause the video here to complete your object categorization. Once you finished come back to the video and press play to continue. Remember, try and have as much fun as possible with categorising and work it into as many of your day-to-day activities as you can.
