﻿Hi, everyone, my name is Matt, and today we're going to learn about art. In this lesson, we're going to learn about sequencing and how we can change different colours to alter them when we make a tie dye T-shirt, or a piece of fabric. In this lesson, we will learn to use specific vocabulary to describe a sequence of our work and the process of altering colours. The key vocabulary we will use is first, after, last, colours, choose, clothes, lighter, darker, and alter, alter means change. For this lesson, you will need a T-shirt or some old fabric preferably white, food colouring or fabric dye, old plastic bottles, elastic bands, gloves, and an apron, and a tray. You will need some parent or carer help or supervision when using the food colouring and fabric dye because it could stain your skin or something else. Let's get ready. Find a quiet and clear space to work away from distractions. Check that you are comfortable and ready to begin learning. This activity could be messy, so check that you're wearing suitable clothing and that you cover your table or wherever you're working. Make sure that your resources are nearby. Press pause while you get everything ready. It's time to get ready. Look, listen, learn. Wow, so I've got all of my equipment ready, all of the materials that we need for our art session. I'm also wearing a pair of gloves and an apron and I've covered my table to protect it and keep it safe from the die. So, let's firstly think about the colours that we need. I have found some red dye and some blue dye. I also have a tray with everything I'm going to need for this session. I have my white piece of fabric. I have my elastic bands and I also have two squirty bottles to put my dye into and that is our first job. So very carefully and over my tray, I'm going to pour the red dye into my bottle very carefully, it's a bit tricky, phew. My red dye is in the bottle and I put my lid on, nice and tight. I'm now going to pour my blue dye into my other bottle. Wow, look at that. Fantastic. So now I have my two different colours, red and blue. We're there. We're ready to make our tie dye T-shirt. Pause the video to complete your task. Resume again once you're finished. Next, we're going to make our tie dye T-shirt. I found a white T-shirt, but you might have found a piece of fabric or something different and that is okay. We're going to start by spreading our T-shirt flat on the table. The next thing we've got to do is with our hands, bring our fingers together and put it right in the middle of our T-shirt and get ready to pinch and twist, pinch and twist, pinch and twist until it's in a very, very tight spiral, it's like a bundle. Then we have to carefully take an elastic band and put it right over the top of our T-shirt. And then we're going to need another elastic band to do exactly the same. So we make it like a cross. Once we finish that, just check that you're happy with how that's looking, and then it goes right round in lots of circles. When you're happy, we're going to put our piece of fabric, our piece of material into our tray. Now, you have to choose which colour you want to use first. I'm going to use blue first. So I take my bottle, undo the cap and I'm going to squirt the blue dye onto my T-shirt. At the minute, my T-shirt colour is light. If I want it to be darker, I'll put some more dye on. You try that too. Wow, it's got a little bit darker. So the more dye I put on, the colour alters and changes and goes darker. I am now going to take the lid off first and put on my red dye onto my T-shirt. All right, you see that? Look at that, the colours are fantastic. And you need to keep going until you've covered all of your T-shirt in these wonderful bright colours. If you want it to be darker, you can put more dye onto your T-shirt, look at that. So it's all coloured and then I turn it over and I do exactly the same on the back of my T-shirt, making sure that I get all of the dye into all of the T-shirts. You might need a little bit of help with this so that your parents or carer could give it a go, and just double check that you're really happy. Another way that colours can change is when they mix together. So we have two separate colours. We had blue and we had red, and when they're mixed together, what colour do you think they make? Have a think about that? Let's have a look. They've mixed together all by themselves on our fabric. And can you see, the colour has started to go purple. That's right. When you mix blue and red together, it makes a purple colour. Well done. Now, we have finished making our tie dye fabric. We've now got to wait for a whole day for it to dry. So put it somewhere safe, keep it in a tray and you can now take off your gloves because we have finished with our die. Pause the video to complete your task. Resume again once you're finished. Wow, today we've done a lot. Let's think about the order or the sequence that we did our activities in. First, you chose some colours and you made dye. I chose two colours. Then you chose your T-shirt or a piece of fabric and you got your elastic bands ready. After that you made your tie dye t-shirt. You learned about mixing colours, making them darker and lighter. And what happens when blue and red mixed together, it changed into a new colour and that colour was purple. Lastly, we're going to look at our tie dye t-shirt after one whole day when it's dried. I'm going to go and get one ready so that you can see what yours might look like. Well done. Wow, here's my finished tie dye. What does yours look like? Can you see where the colours have mixed together to make new ones or where they're darker or lighter because we've put more or less of our dye on? Wow, I hope yours looks great. Well done, you've done really well. To make it easier, you could focus on altering colour in only one way, for example, making it lighter or darker. To make this lesson harder, you could use more than one colour when dyeing your material. And for other ideas, why not choose different ways of tying the fabric to create new patterns or why not plan a fashion show to show your new clothes? That's the end of today's art session.
