﻿Hi, everybody. Today, we are going to be applying all that we've learned about length and perimeter, and we're going to be answering different problem-solving questions. I'm really looking forward to this lesson, I hope you are too. So, put on your hats, tighten your ties, and tell the computer, "Now I'm a mathematician." Great, let's get started with the lesson. Here is today's lesson agenda. First, we're going to be looking at our star words, then we're going to be solving a problem, before I might give you a clue, and then you'll do an independent task. But before we begin, please make sure you have a pencil, a piece of paper, and a ruler. If you need to, please pause the video now to collect those resources. Great, let's get started. Here we have our star words and we're going to be using our strategies, model, explain about, twice, half further, estimate. Remember, these are key vocabulary for this lesson. The problem, a group of five children on holiday in the Lake Districts have found a short walking route around the edge of the farm they're staying on. The route goes past five oak trees and two of the children, Edgar and Celia, think that the trees are all about the same distance apart. The other three children disagree. To settle the argument, they each measured the distance between two trees as they walked around the farm. Solve the clues to find the distance measured by each child so that you can decide who is correct. And here we have our children. Arya and our clue is, Arya measured half the distance that Edgar measured. Bhavin, Bhavin measured 190 metres further than Arya. Celia, Celia walked 200 metres less than Bhavin. Denise, Denise walked 76 metres less than Edgar. And Edgar, Edgar walked twice as far as Arya. So those are our clues. For each clue, what do you need to know how to solve? Arya measured half the distance that Edgar measures. So that's the clue, but in order to work out quickly, we need to know how far Edgar measured before we can find out how far Arya measured. Bhavin measured 190 minutes further than Arya, but in order to know that, we need to know how far Arya measured before we can find out how far he measured. Celia measured 200 metres less than Bhavin, but we need to find out how Bhavin measured before we can find out how far Celia measured. So, in order to work out the distance measured by each child, we need to use these clues, but where do we begin? I'm going to give you clue one. Clue one, Edgar measured 250 metres. From this, you can work out the rest of the clues. So what you need to do is to pause this video and work out the clues. Here are our original clues. So we already know that Edgar measured 250 metres, and we know that Arya measured half the distance that Edgar measured. Therefore, Arya measured 125 metres. We can also work out how far Bhavin meausred, because he measured 119 metres further than Arya. And 125 plus 190 is equal to 315. We can then work out how far Celia walked, because 315 subtract 208 is equal to 107. After, Denise, she walked 76 metres less than Edgar and 250 metres subtract 76 metres is equal to 174.
