﻿Hi everyone. Last time we started learning about this amazing novel, "Annie John" by Jamaica Kincaid. We learned that it's set in Antigua in the Caribbean, and that explores the trials and tribulations of growing up. Today we're going to learn about what happens in chapter one, and we're going to find out what it is that Annie is afraid of, but she's also completely fascinated by. You're going to need a pen and a piece of paper, and I'd like you to remove any distractions so that you can learn your absolute best. Okay, let's start off with a quick recap. We know that Annie John is a novel about a girl growing up in Antigua. It was written by Jamaica Kincaid, and it explores the challenges of coming of age. And we learned that coming of age period is that transition between the age of about 11, and the age of about 17. Annie keeps a trunk under her bed it once belonged belong to her mother, but now it contains all of her precious items. And those precious items indicates that Annie is privileged, meaning she's wealthy and lucky, and she's very much loved and cared for by her family. Alright, let's do a quick check of your understanding. Which two of these sentences are correct please? Hit pause and write down your answer. Alright, let's check your work. Option a, is very much correct. Annie John is a coming-of-age novel written by Jamaica Kincaid. Option b is wrong. Jamaica Kincaid isn't a novel, Jamaica Kincaid is the writer, it's the novelist. Annie's life is hard because she lacks caring parents. No, we've know we've already seen the Annie's life, is lucky and blessed and she is protected by her family. Option d is also correct. The items in Annie's trunk do indicate that she is loved and protected, and Annie's family isn't poor in fact, Annie's family is relatively comfortably off. Well done if you chose a and d. So today we're going to get to know Annie a little bit more, and we're going to find out the story of chapter one. And then at the end of the lesson, we're going to learn a really important skill of embedding quotations, which is going to show our writing to be incredibly impressive. Okay, let's start learning about what happens in chapter one. In chapter one, Annie is 10 years old and her and her family go to the countryside to spend the summer. And they stay in a house a little bit like this one. And it's a house that her father actually built, in the countryside. And around the house they have a little bit of land where they keep animals and the absolute favourite food of Annie throughout that summer. In fact, the only thing that she really wants to eat are the duck eggs produced by the ducks they keep on their land. Now one morning when Annie's playing outside, she looks up at the horizon on a hill, just near her house. And she sees a cemetery, a little bit like this one. And as she looks at the cemetery in the distance, she can see a little figures there in the morning. And she wonders what they're doing because she's only 10 years old. She's not fully aware of what happens in cemeteries. And she goes and asks her mother about it. And her mother explains that because the figures are there in the morning, it possibly means that a child has died. Because it was traditional for children to be buried in the morning rather than the afternoon. And this gets Annie thinking. She's learning for the first time about life, and about death. And she says until then I had not known that children died. Now this makes her feel afraid, but it also makes her feel fascinated and she wants to learn more. And she starts going to funerals and she starts visiting the cemetery to find out more about the natural process of life and death. And she's so fascinated by it that she goes to school and she tells all her friends about what she's finding out. And she says, I told all my friends about this death. I would take them aside individually, so I could repeat the details over and over again. And we see there in that quotation that she is so fascinated by it, that she's telling all her friends about it individually so that she can say that all the details. Now she starts visiting funerals a lot. And she starts then imagining her own death. She thinks about what would happen if she died and how her family would react. And she begins thinking about her father. And she says here, "He would be so overcome with grief." Should Annie herself ever die. And I think what Jamaica Kincaid is showing here, that at age 10 Annie's growing up. When we're very little and we don't necessarily understand the difference between life and death. And when we get a little bit older, we start learning about it and we start realising that it's a natural process of life. Now, not only does that happen in that in chapter one, but Annie also gets us up in a little bit of trouble as well. Because on her way home from school, Annie's mother asks her to collect some fish from the fish monger to eat for dinner. But Annie stops off at the cemetery and therefore completely forgets to pick up this fish. Now when she gets home, her mother says, "Well, Annie where's the fish?" And Annie doesn't tell the truth. Annie lies and says, "Oh, I did go to the fishmonger, but he said they were all out and he apologised." At which point Annie's mum shows Annie the cooker, where she is already cooking the fish and explains that the fishmonger, when Annie hadn't collected it came and delivered it herself, himself. So Annie is punished now for two things, she's punished for forgetting the fish, but she's also punished for lying about it. And she's forced to eat dinner outside by herself. She's feeling lonely, she's feeling low. But happily at the end of the novel, Jamaica Kincaid shows how loving Annie's mother is because, when she goes to bed, we can see here, "When I climbed into bed, she came in to kissed me anyway." So in chapter one, we get three things, really. We get any learning for the first time about death, we get Annie rebelling and misbehaving a little bit, but we also get Annie being loved and cherished by her family. Alright, let's take your understanding of chapter one. What is Annie's favourite food? Choose from the four option and say it aloud to your screen. And one of you said, duck eggs. How old is Annie in chapter one? Say it aloud. You should have said 10 years old. What did Annie's father build? And well done if you said, their house. What did Annie tell her friends about at school? And well done if you said, the funerals. What does Annie begin to think about an awful lot in chapter one, choose your answer. Say it aloud. And you should have said her own death. And finally, what does Annie's mother forgive her for? Choose from the four options. And you should have said, forgetting the fish. Okay, we know what happens in chapter one now. And I want us to think about quite a big question. The big question is this. Why does Annie become so interested in death in chapter one? And some possible answers might include, things like this. Well Annie is the eponymous hero of the novel, as she gets older she becomes aware of her own mortality, and she begins to realise that life is transient. Now we have three high level concepts there. Eponymous hero, mortality and transient. And we're now going to learn what each of those mean, and then we're going to use them in a short piece of writing. So eponymous hero, what is an eponymous hero? An eponymous hero is the character a book is named after. So if you have a main character and the name of the book, takes that main characters name, that character is the eponymous hero. A nice example might be Oliver Twist is the eponymous hero of Dickens' favourite famous novel. And I wonder if you can think of any other eponymous heroes. Perhaps you're thinking of Harry Potter or Jane Eyre, both of them are the character that the book is named after. So they are the eponymous hero. The second concept is this one, mortality. And mortality simply means an understanding of death. So I could say to you, for example, as we grow older, we become aware of our own mortality. We become aware of death. And finally, transient. If something is transient, it lasts only for a short time. It's temporary, it's not permanent. So I might say something like summer is transient, it cannot last forever. And if you've completed our lesson on Shakespeare Sonnet 18, you'll know that that's exactly what Shakespeare teachers us in that Sonnet, that summer can't last forever, therefore it is transient. So how might we use these? So let's understand. So let's check our understanding of those terms. Which one means an understanding of death? Say it aloud. And of one you said, mortality. Which one means lasting only for a short time? Nice and loud, please. And it's transient. And which one is the character a book is named after? And of course it must be eponymous hero. Well that's too easy, now let's make it a little bit harder. Which word or concept would you put in this gap? And you should have said, Annie realises that life is transient, it doesn't last forever. Which one would you put here? And one of you said, Annie is the eponymous hero of Kincaid's novel. And how about this one? Seeing funerals teaches Annie of the mortality of life. Good. Well, why does Annie become so interested in death in chapter one? We know she's the eponymous hero of the novel. As she gets older, she does become aware of her own mortality she learns about death. And she realises that life is transient, it can't last forever. So if I was writing a short paragraph in answer to this question, it might look like this. In chapter one, our eponymous hero Annie turns 10 years old. She becomes fascinated by death and funerals, perhaps because she's becoming aware of her own mortality. She begins to realise that life is transient and that nothing can last forever. Okay, over to you. You're going to hit pause now. And I'd like you to write your own short paragraph in answer to that question. And I'd like you to use the three impressive concepts on the right. Hit pause and off you go. Alright, well done everybody you've done a great job so far and this brings us onto our final portion of the lesson. Where we're learning the really important skill of embedding quotations. When we embed quotations, it makes our writing so, so, so impressive. So let's practise it now. First of all, what is a quotation? Well a quotation is a piece of text taken from the text and we surround it in quotation marks. We've already looked at some quotations from Annie Johns chapter one. We looked at this one, when Annie says "Until then I had not known that children died." We've looked at this one, when she goes to school do you remember? And she says, "I could repeat the details over and over again," to all the other children about what she's learned about death. She also says "I began to go to funerals," because she was so fascinated by this new understanding. And when she imagines her own death, she thinks about her father who would be "So overcome with grief," she says. And finally we looked at this quotation at the end, despite her misbehaving, she says, "When I climbed into bed, she came and kissed me." And who is the she? Yep that's right, it's Annie's mother. So these are quotes, but we want to embed them in sentences. So when we're writing about these quotes, they flow. For example, have a look at this one. The first quote, "Until then, I had not known that children died." If I want to embed that in a sentence, so I'm writing about Annie from my perspective, I might write something like this. Until that moment, Annie had not "known that children died." Now that's an embedded quotation because the quote fits in the sentence and the sentence flows. The sentence makes sense and I'm talking about Annie. Now what have I done here? Well first of all, I've come up with a short phrase that introduces the quotation. Until that moment Annie had not. Then I choose in a short section of our quote that fits in that sentence below, here. Until that moment, Annie had not known that children died. And finally, I've made sure that I've surrounded that embedded quotation in quotation marks. So what we've got here, is one sentence until that moment, Annie had not known that children died. and that quote fits in that sentence, it's embedded inside. Let's have a look at another example. Our second quote is this one, "I could repeat the details over and over again." And again, if I wanted to embed this quote into a sentence, it might look like this. Annie told her friends about the funerals separately, so that she could repeat the details over and over again. Again, what have I done here? I've come up with a introductory phrase that introduces the quote, explains who we're talking about. I've chosen a short section of the quote that fits in to my sentence, and I've surrounded it with those quote marks. Annie told her friends about the funeral separately so that she could repeat the details over and over again. A final example, nice and easy this one, "I began to go to funerals." If I was to embed that into the quote into my sentence, I would say Annie began to go to funerals. when she becomes aware of mortality. Here you can see that I've done a little bit before the embedded quotation and a little bit afterwards as well. That quite is embedded into that sentence, that sentence makes complete sense. You're going to have a practise now. Here is your quote, "He would be so overcome with grief." Remember who is the he, who is being referred to here? And it is Annie's father, so I'd like you to start your embedded quotation sentence with Annie imagines. Hit pause and write one down please. Okay, there are lots of different ways you could have answered this, but it might look a little bit like this one. Annie imagines that her father would be so overcome with grief if she could should die. You need to check yours that it makes it a checklist that your sentence makes full sense. Check that your quotation is embedded inside the sentence, and that it's, you've got your quotation marks as well. Okay, second practise for you. "When I climbed into bed she came and kissed me." Again remember, who is the she? Who was only talking about here. And of course the she is her mother. And I'd like you to write your own sentence start it anyway you like, that embeds a part of that set of that quotation inside your sentence. Hit pause now. And again, there might be loads of different ways you could do this. It might look a little bit like this, Annie is relieved when her mother came and kissed her. after she forgot the fish. I only chose a small section of that, and that's absolutely fine. Okay, now that you know how to embed quotations in a sentence, we're going to upgrade them even more. We're going to learn how we can analyse embedded quotations. And we're going to this by using the handy word, when. We're going to practise starting our sentences with when, that they include embedded quotations and then analyse them as well. We're going to use the same examples to practise. For example, I could repeat the details over and over again. Remember, Annie's talking about speaking to her friends at school, being fascinated by death. And I want to start my embedded sentence with the word, when. When Annie repeats the details over and over again, she reveals her fascination with death. Let's have a look at what I've put here. I've started off my sentence with when. I've put in a comma in the middle of that sentence, if we start with when we need a comma in the middle. I've got that lovely word, reveals that shows that we are analysing that quote. And we've got that embedded quote nicely in the middle. When Annie repeats the details over and over again, she reveals her fascination with death. That sounds like another example. "I began to go to funerals." How would I analyse this in an embedded quotation sentence it might do like this. When Annie began to go to funerals, Kincaid reveals Annie's desire to learn more about mortality. Again here we've started with the word, when. We've got that comment in the middle of the sentence, we've got that analytical verb there. And this is a very impressive sentence because it uses the name of the author, Kincaid reveals. Right your turn. Here is your quote. "He would be so overcome with grief." Hit pause and complete that sentence please. Start it with the word when, and see if you can analyse the embedded quotation using the word reveals. Hit pause now. Alright, let's check your work. You might've written something like this, when Annie imagines her father overcome with grief, if she should die, Kincaid reveals that Annie understands that her life is transient. Now whatever you've written, I'd like you to check that you've got that word when, you've got the comma and you've got that lovely analytical verb, reveals and that your quotation is embedded so that it makes sense. Okay. If you've got all these things, give them a little tick. And your final practise now please. "When I climbed into bed she came and kissed me." How would you put that in a sentence?
