Now today, we are going to be looking at adding two numbers together using a number track to help us. I hope you're ready to begin your learning, because we certainly are. All right, let's begin. Now, for this lesson, you will need a number track, which is available in the Lesson Resources for today. And, you will need some countable objects in two different colours. Now, I have used purple cubes and blue cubes, but you can use whatever you have to hand. So, perhaps you have counters, or marbles, or some other countable objects that you can use. Now, if you haven't got these objects ready, please press Pause, and then resume the video once you have collected them. Right, well let's have a look at our big picture for this unit. I wonder if you can have a look at the picture and tell me what nursery rhyme you think it comes from? Do you think you can shout the answer at the screen? Yes, that's correct! It comes from Mary Had a Little Lamb! And, that's right, Lemony, it's a little lamb just like you! Brilliant work. Now, I wonder if you can sing along with me? We're going to sing the nursery rhyme together, using your best singing voices. Are you ready? I think we are, too. A one, two three! ♪ Mary had a little lamb, little lamb, little lamb ♪ ♪ Mary had a little lamb ♪ ♪ His fleece was white a snow ♪ ♪ And everywhere that Mary went, Mary went, Mary went ♪ ♪ Everywhere that Mary went ♪ ♪ The lamb was sure to go ♪ ♪ He followed her to school one day ♪ ♪ School one day, school one day ♪ ♪ He followed her to school one day ♪ ♪ Which was against the rules ♪ ♪ It made the children laugh and play ♪ ♪ Laugh and play, laugh and play ♪ ♪ It made the children laugh and play ♪ ♪ To see a lamb at school ♪ That was brilliant singing, everyone. I could hear you, so could Lemony, all the way from here. Give yourself a pat on the back, brilliant work. Now, I wonder if you could help me a little bit more with our big picture. I would like you to look really carefully, and I would like you to see if you can help me. I want us to make a representation of something that we can count in the picture under the number 10. Let's have a go together first, shall we? In the picture, I can see that there are five birds flying in the sky. Using your careful counting finger, can you help me count those birds together? Let's make sure that Mrs. Khaira and Lemony are correct. One, two, three, four, five. That's correct, there are five birds flying in the picture. Now, I'm going to represent them with my cubes. Let's see if we can do that together. Help me count. One, two, three, four, and five. There are five birds flying in the sky, and there are five cubes representing those five birds. Brilliant work, everyone. Now, I wonder if you can press Pause on the video, and I'd like to see if you can represent something that you can count in the picture, using your countable objects? Please press Play once you have done the task. Right, well we're going to do some work here, helping Mary out, because I think Mary is in a little bit of a pickle. We're going to use our First, Then, and Now stories to help her solve her problem. So, let's have a look at what's gone wrong. Well first, Mary had four lambs in her field. And there they are, let's count them out together. One, two, three, and four. That's right, first there were four lambs. Then, Mary found three more lambs wandering around in her field, and there they are. One, two, three. Now, Mary wants to know how many lambs she has altogether. Perhaps, Lemony, you can help us work out the answer. And, we're going to use our number track to help us. So, let's have a think again, about what we know. First, Mary had four lambs. Now, I'm going to use one of my coloured cubes to represent those four lambs on the number track. Can you help me count them out? One, two, three, and four. That's right, first, Mary had four lambs. Then, Mary found three more lambs wandering around in her field. Let's use another colour to represent those three lambs. Can you help me count them out? One, two, and three. Now, we want to know how many lambs Mary has got altogether. Now, we don't need to count from one, because we already know, don't we Lemony, that she started off with four lambs. So, we're going to count on from four. So, we've got four, five, six, and seven. Now, Mary has got seven lambs altogether. And, we know that because four lambs plus three lambs is equal to seven lambs. Great work, everybody. Great work, everyone. Now, it's your turn to have a go with your very own talk partner. I'm going to be doing the activity with Lemony today. Now, in the Lesson Resources, you will see that there are some cards with some birds on them, and you and your talk partner are going to be using them in this activity. Okay, so I'm going to go first. I'm going to pick one of those cards. First, there are two birds, one and two. Now, using my manipulatives, I'm going to have a go at representing those two birds onto my number track. So, here we go: one, and two. First, there were two birds. Lemony's going to have a go, now. He's going to pick a card. Let's see what he's chosen. Oh, great choice, Lemony. Then, there were one, two, three more birds. Then, there were three more birds. Lemony, are you ready to represent that number onto your number track? Let's do that together, shall we? One, two, three. Then, there were three more birds. Now, we want to know how many birds there were altogether. So, I know we started with two, so we're going to count on from two. Two, three, four, five. Now, there are five birds altogether, because two birds plus three birds is equal to five birds. That's correct, great work, Lemony. Brilliant teamwork. Oh, I wonder if anyone picked this card during their Talk Task? Can you read the word that it says on the card? Begins with a "z" sound. What number begins with a "z" sound? Can you shout the answer out at the screen? Yes, that's correct, well done everyone! It says zero. Now, let's have a look at what happens if I had picked this card during our Talk Task. So, Lemony's first. First, there were four birds. One, two, three, and four. Let's represent those four birds onto our number track. One, two, three, and four. Great work, everyone. First, there were four birds. Then, I pick this card, then I find zero more. Now, can I represent zero with cubes on my number track? Hmm, have a think. Well, Lemony's shaking his head. He says no, you cannot. So, do I need to put any more cubes onto my number track? No! First there were four birds, then I find zero more. Now, altogether, I still have four birds. Great work, everyone. Now, I want you to pause the video, and I'd like you to hurry on with your Talk Task, exploring what happens if somebody picks the zero card. Here, we have five birds sitting on a tree branch, but they didn't all start out together. Some of the birds came first, and then, some of the birds flew in later. Now, let's say that one bird was sitting on the tree branch first. There he is, look. First, there was one bird sitting on the tree. I'm going to represent him using a purple cube on my number track. There he is. First, there was one bird. Then, how many more birds flew in? Well, let's see how many more birds we have left. We have one, two, three, and four. Then, four more birds flew in. Now, let's use a different colour to represent those four birds. One, two, three, and four. Then, there were four more birds that flew in. Now, altogether, I can see that there are five birds sitting on the tree. And we know that one bird plus four birds is equal to five birds. Now, there are five birds sitting on the tree.
