﻿Good morning, everyone and welcome to Art with me, Mr Di Salvo. Today we're going to be creating an artwork which links to our theme of war and conflict. Now, last week we created a mind map of possible ideas, which linked to our theme of war and conflict. And this will begin to create an artwork which links to this. There's three questions for you on the screen. And they are as follows. What objects could we draw? How would it link to the theme? And aside from a pencil, what else could we use for our artwork? I would like you to pause the screen now, think about those questions and then when you've thought about it, come back to me and we'll discuss it. Okay. So welcome back. So the things we're going to need today for our lesson are as follows: we're going to need some plain paper, just plain white photocopy paper, as I kind of call it, a sharp pencil, some different strength coffees. Now you're going to need for that three cups, three coffee cups, a teaspoon of coffee granules in each one and three different amounts of water. So you want one with a tiny amount of water in it, a bit more and a bit more, so that you've got a sort of dark coffee, a strong dark coffee, a sort of middle strength coffee, and the one with the most water in it will be our weakest coffee. And then to draw with we're going to use whatever we can find of the following: so a cotton ear bud, matchsticks, a cocktail stick or a paperclip and an object which links to our theme, and I'm going to show you what I chose to draw now. Okay, so I've chosen to draw a teddy bear which is just here, and you're probably wondering how does it link to our theme of war and conflict? Okay, so if you look at the mind map on the right hand side you'll, if we kind of go from conflict, it goes to World War Two and then to refugee and then splits off to possessions and children. And I was thinking to myself, what would a small child grab if they had to leave their home in a desperate rush? Let's imagine there's unfortunately, something's happened, a war, a conflict, you know, a bombing, you know, hopefully not, but, you know, what would a child grab that would, then make them feel more comfortable or comfort them when they're scared? And I thought a teddy bear, so that was my obvious, kind of not obvious, choice but that was my choice. And again, it's something that you perhaps have at home. You could think of other objects that could be good for that. But again, teddy bear was the one that made, sort of, a connection I thought was quite interesting, because more than likely we probably haven't got tanks at home or sort of military objects, perhaps you have got some sort of maybe, a uniform from a parent or a medal and that would be great equally, but this is a bit more abstract, but less, sort of, equally interesting. Now during my video demonstration, if that's slide comes up, it means it's time for you to pause the video and do the artwork, okay. And yes the tools that we're going to use are quite unconventional, so what you wouldn't normally draw, but we're going to make the best of what we have got. All I will ask, is that you take your time when creating your work and don't just try and get it done, but do it to the best of your ability. And if you need to practise an idea or things then please do that, and it's all about using what we've got, really and as I said, please pause the video if you need to try it more than once, then that's fine, that'd be fantastic. Now, I should get my video up for us to see, okay, I'm just going to go full screen with that and we can begin our artwork. So, the first thing I would like you to do is this. I would like you to have your first piece of paper and your three strengths of coffee, So as you can see from left to right, I've got the most water, so therefore the weakest, the middle one which is the sort of middle strength one, and the left hand, sorry, the right hand side as we look at it the darkest coffee, so the least amount of water, so sort of dark, mid, light across. We've got matchsticks and we have got some cotton buds and I've accquired a paperclip, which hopefully you've got some of those things at home. This first piece of paper is all about what we call mark making, so just trying to make different types of lines. So here, I'm just testing out how dark and light the strengths of coffee are or are painted, we could call it, and the cotton bud, we have quite nice, consistent thick lines, quite a soft end to it. The matchstick, I'm again, just trying out now to see how the different kind of coffees work with that implement. So you can see the darkest coffee next to the darkest line, and it's a quite nice scribbled line or scumbling, as it is called within art terms. So just trying out to see which, sort of tools and which strengths work best with which one, cause you might find that the softer tool, like the cotton bud will pick up the lighter one better than perhaps something like a matchstick. And again, just seeing how different types of lines work with that. Crosshatching, which again is a nice way to add tone to our work. Here with a paperclip, found that worked really well for sort of thin, detailed lines and it's got kind of quite a, because of the nature of being metal, it got a kind of scratchy sort of texture to it, but again works really, really well. This is the quite nice, sort of fine lines with that. Now the other thing, again going back to the cotton bud, was then looking at, okay, well, could we do something like pointillism or sort of stippling? So just using the end of it as a sort of flat tool and it works quite well for that and again, trying out the matchstick to see the difference that would make with it. So this whole page is what we call mark making, it's a great way to, when you're using something for the first time, just to understand how it responds to what we're trying to do. And in the end I maybe thought I'd use my finger just to see if that would work, and that has again, quite a sort of softer edge to it. And then I then decided that actually I could perhaps use it as a tool to sort of put in a lot of base kind of colour almost with it. Now this is quite thin paper so please now I would like you, as I'm going to pause my video, to have a go at that mark making page, if you need to rewind it, please do. Once you've had a go at that, then please restart the video and we'll be begin our actual drawing. Now, we've got teddy bear as I kind of hold him up here you can see, I'm just trying to draw the basics of him and I've chosen to use the cotton bud, because it's a softer edge, and all I'm trying to do is, in a sort of sitting position, try and work out the basic shapes that are there, okay. And I'm going to pause there again, so what we tried to do was try and get the sort of, circles, ovals, whichever shapes we see in our objects to get them in. We've used the cotton bud to start off with, because eventually we don't want to see those lines because of course, cause it's kind of fur you'll notice that we don't have a hard edge around this object, it's not a cartoon, so to speak, okay. So it's over to you now guys, to draw the basic shapes out, get those accurate, I didn't use a pencil, I went straight in with the coffee and if you try and use your weakest coffee, that will hopefully have quite a faded line for you to work to. Once you've done that, please press start again and we will carry on. Okay, so welcome back, so now I am trying to block in the sort of base colour in a sense. So just blocking as kind of like the main bulk of the area with the sort of mixtures of kind of coffees, I've chose to use the cotton bud and actually also my finger, I turn the paper over in a second and that's only because, to sort of show you that it starts to come through. So if I just pause there for a second, you'll see that where you can see the coffee is coming through, so I've got to be really, really careful and you have equally, that you don't try and use too much at once. If that's the case, it will tear and it will kind of fall apart, so you need to sort of work for a while, pause, dry it either under a hairdryer or leave it in a sort of sunny spot for a while, but don't add too much coffee at once cause the paper will start to tear. Okay, so again here, I've now started just to add using the matchstick, using that kind of, if you remember that sort of term, that sort of scumbling sort of technique, which is a great way to sort of, add a sort of scratched line to our work. And again, because of the nature of our sort of teddy bear, he's got fur and therefore the type of line sits really well for this, but if you've got a different object, you might want to use the crosshatching, the pointillism, the dots that is, for yours and I'm kind of keen and I'm trying to mix up the different coffees there because I want to begin to add tone to our kind of character because as he sits there, he's going to be darker in certain areas. So I'm going to pause the video there, ask you to pause now and begin adding tone and some textures to our work, okay. And then once you're happy with your work, please restart and we'll carry on. So, welcome back and now it's really a case of now of trying to block in as much as I can. I'm using my finger to block in some areas of the bulk of it, cause I don't want to have lots and lots of white showing through and again, getting in a few more sort of details so that the nose is quite dark, the eyes are quite dark as well. And again, just trying to kind of carry on with that texture and you can see bit by bit, we're starting to lose now the outline that was there. It takes a little while to build up, but we're just trying to add in as much texture as we can and so we're working within that shape, but we're not trying to work within the lines, if it goes out the lines, for the purposes of the texture what I've got, I'm going to the pause the video once more there, just for me to explain what I'm doing there. So the soles of his, his or her, the bear's feet and the kind of like nose area, these are different texture too, so I'm not going to use the scumbling technique or the sort of scratch lines. I'm going to use,in fact, use the cotton bud for a sort of softer sort of, type of, kind of, work and technique, just to sort of show that they're a different texture. There's a reason for me putting in differently, just to explain. And again, just trying to sort of put in a fair bit of the detail and work in between the different sort of tools that I've got available, just to sort of work that and again, bit by bit looking at how we can create tone, texture of our object. And again, just working into the chin now just to start to darken up a bit because necks underneath a person or an object, if it's got a sort of chin or an area where there's no light hitting, it's going to be darker and again, inside of the arms, perhaps not now because it's under a bright light, but when I was looking at it originally it was quite dark under there. So again, just carrying on, I'm not sort of rushing it, this is obviously been sped up, I'm just trying my best now to sort of block in areas that I think are darker to give it a sense of structure cause it's a 3D object of course. And then looking at that, and again, it may take you a little while to do that, but it's a great way to sort of build up our work rather than just completely cover a whole area. The key thing is, is the basic shapes are accurate and now we're just applying a tone and texture to our work to give it a sense of, the feel for being an object. Again, you might find that you need to use one of the other tools or maybe you found something else, I'm going to pause my video there and it's over to you now guys to really sort of get in the majority of that tone and texture. Once you're happy with your work, I'm now going to show you the next stage, where again this was left to dry at times or dried underneath the hairdryer or left somewhere sunny, so please do not rush it, if it feels like it's getting a bit too wet, then just leave it and go back to it. Okay, welcome back on this next stage, this is now dry and I've decided to use some pencil. So by using pencil, we're now using more than one media. Media means the type of what we're using, the tools. So this is pencil and coffee, so we'd call this a mixed media artwork. The reason I switched to pencil, is that I just wanted to be able to darken a few areas and just kind of see how it worked with it, so you can see at the bottom there just sort of adding some darker tones into really sort of emphasise where it's darker underneath the arms and just working again, back and forth and looking at my work and seeing, looking at the objects. That's the key thing again, looking at the object, looking at your work and seeing where it needs to be darker. Adding some more coffee in now, where it is shiny in places, it's not necessarily wet, it might just be that the coffee has actually got a bit of a kind of glaze to it. But yeah, just really kind of carefully working into that now and sort of looking at where I can kind of add more to it. And it's a really good thing to stop, look at it, if you need to let it dry for a while, go back to your object. I'm now on those areas, just adding some darker to to give it a sense of sort of 3D to it. And again, I'm just sort of reminding myself of, okay, I'm going to pause my video there actually, I should have explained that. So the reason for the mind map was that I'm now going to then just add to this some of those key words from my mind map and or words that link back to our theme. So just using the coffee, words like lost, family, sad, just wanting to make connections back to this teddy bear and our theme. Home, this idea that I've had to leave. And I would like to you now, please, to look at your mind map and or think of some more words or words that link back between the object and the theme of war and conflict and add those however you feel that you can use the coffee with one of the tools, the matchstick or the cotton bud, you could use a pencil, which I've equally done. Okay, and we're now going to add some more words in fact to this. So again, just using those words and sometimes repeating ourselves, that's fine. Varying the size of the words, cause that equally creates interest by having some words bigger and smaller than others. Not necessarily to say that they're more or less important, but just varying the scale of things. And again, and you're seeing that I've started to use pencil as well, because again, it's a mixed media artwork, so just those words from our mind map to sort of to show that we're sort of making a link back, and I just thought I'd kind of include a heart motif, because this idea of, of sort of love, of family and home and this sort of sadness that it brings. And again, just varying the size of them and just any gaps. I'd like you now, please, to complete your words, and there's just one last thing I'd like you to do before we are finished with our work. So please complete, carry on adding a word, shall I say, and then come back to me and we will look at the last details. So welcome back, so the last thing I'm doing here now, which seems quite strange, I know, but I really like the effect of it, is I'm just using some coffee and sort of splashing it over it. The reason for it, it's not really meant to sort of replicate an idea, but it just gives quite nice effect to the work and the sort of splatters of sort of, could it be almost like tears? I don't know, sadness? I don't know, but it's certainly has a nice visual effect to it. So that's what I'd like you to do and try that and you can, you know, please be careful, don't make too much of a mess, and hopefully your work is now complete and if it isn't please complete your work, and we're just going to go and look at one last detail. So, okay, you could now extend your work further. So if you finished your work, then I always ask my students to look at things like, photographing their work with their phone and then using some of the lots of apps available and seeing how they can change the appearance of it and see if they can extend their work further. It's always a great sort of idea just to kind of, rather than just finishing your artwork, looking at, what else I could do with it? You know, could you add some more texts with it? Could you combine it on one of your apps with another photograph that you've taken, or maybe with a photograph of your house or of a person? So it shows the person or the place that it came from, just a way of extending your work. I hope you enjoyed today's lesson and we're now finished.
