﻿Hi everyone. My name is Alistair. And today we're going to learn all about rugby. Let's go. For this lesson, you will need a rugby ball, a beach ball, a chair, and some plant pots. If you haven't got these items, that's fine. For example, a tennis ball or a football is just as good as a rugby ball. So use items that you have around your house. Press pause whilst you get things ready. Let's get ready. Find a quiet, clear space to work away from distractions, ensure the area is safe and that your child is feeling fit and well to take part in the lesson. Check you are wearing the right clothes for sport and physical activity. I'd really encourage your child to be as independent as possible in getting themselves ready. Make sure your resources are nearby. Use a familiar reference to prepare the learner that the activity is going to start. This could be a symbol, a sound or even a song. Press pause whilst you get things ready. It's time to look, listen and learn. Before we play rugby, we need to get our muscles ready. I've made a space in my garden and I've got some different obstacles for your child to move in and out off. You could do this in your living room, or you could do it on your daily exercise in a park, but it's a great way of getting your child to move, having an awareness of space and to change directions. I always like to warm up using a ball, so we get used to how the ball feels and the keeping controlled. So the first thing we're going to do is we're going to walk in and out of my obstacles and around the space. Let's go. So moving in and out of the different spaces. Once you've done that a couple of times you can start to speed that movement up. So I'm going to walk a bit more quickly. So in and out of spaces. Change in direction. And the last time we're going to move into a bit of a jog and make sure that we're avoiding those obstacles in changing directions. So you could shout out different directions to your child to help them to remember to move in different ways. So one last jog. I'm feeling hot. My muscles are ready to play rugby. Please pause the video to complete your task. There are lots of different ways we move in rugby. And today we're going to look at how we jump and catch the ball. We're going to look at the scrum and then finally how we tackle. So first up to jump and catch the ball. So I'm going to feet slightly apart and to bend down and then jump and catch the ball and down and jump and catch the ball. Try doing that a few times with your child and get the use of really stretching, to try and catch that ball. The next one is a scrum. So I'm going to come down onto my knees for the scrum, and I'm just going to put my hands forward and really just try to push forward and lean forward. Your child might choose to go onto their feet and that's fine so they can come up and push forward really try to push and use their strength there. And finally, we have our tackle. So for our tackle, we're going to go down to the floor and try and get back up onto our feet. You'll really see some persistence from your child, makes them really trying hard to pull themselves back onto their feet. So for our tackle, I'm going to come down onto the floor, on my knees and all the way down, and then get back up onto my feet. Your child might do this a bit more quickly, so that could get really down onto the floor and get back up. This is great for this as well we start to get a bit muddy and dirty. Try those exercises again and see if we can use the ball this time. So I want to comeback and first up, I'm going to come down and jumped up and catch the ball, down lower and then jump up and catch the ball. And then back to try the rugby scrum. So I'm going to put the ball down onto my knees, push onto the ball and really push forward and see if I can win that ball back. Again your child might choose to go on their feet. So pushing forward as hard as I can and trying to win that ball back. And finally last we have our rugby tackle. So I've got my ball, I'm looking after the ball, I'm going to come down onto the floor, I'm going to rollover and then get back onto my feet. Try that again. So I've got my ball and come down onto the floor, roll over and then get back onto my feet. Great work, everyone. Please pause the video to complete your task. If child is a wheelchair user or has challenges around their mobility, there are lots of exercises they can do to practise their rugby skills. The first one we're going to stretch and catch the ball. So let me stretch up and catch the ball and back to the middle. And we stretch up all the way up, catch the ball and back to the middle and one last time we stretch up all the way up, we catch the ball and bring it back to the middle. We can recreate the feeling of the scrum by squeezing onto the ball and pushing forward. So we squeeze and push forward and back to the middle. We sit upright, and we squeeze and push forward. And one more time. So we sit upright and we squeeze and push forward, as hard as we can. We can recreate the feeling of a tackle in rugby. If your child holds onto the ball as tight as they can, and you try and rip the ball off them, take the ball away. You can take this in turns in trying to tackle each other. So we hold onto the ball as tight as we can, and we try and rip and wrestle the ball away. This is a great workout for our muscles and is lots of fun. If you try our three exercises, two, maybe even three times, that is a great workout for your child. Please pause the video to complete your task. A really important skill for rugby and lots of different sports is catching. And today we're going to concentrate on three things. We're going to keep our eyes on the ball. We're going to always be ready and we're going to have our hands up ready to catch the ball. To start with, I've chosen a big, bright ball that's nice and easy to catch. And we're just going to throw the ball very, very slightly and just watch the ball back into our hands. You might do this for a few minutes with your child, just for them to get used to the feel of the balls and start to really think about having their hands up about being ready and watching the ball. They might bring it back close into their chest. So they still got control. This is a time where you might start to build some anticipation with your child. So you might go 1, 2, 3, and catch, and you can go through that a few times and your child will really start to anticipate that it's time to catch. Maybe you throw in the goal to them. And after we've done that we can make it more difficult. So I've got my rugby ball here. You might have a different ball at home is slightly more difficult to catch, but the same skill. So I've got the ball. I've got up my hands up and back into my chest. I can start to throw a bit higher, make this a bit more difficult. So all the way up, hands up and back into my chest. And I can do that several times with a different ball. If you want to make up really hard, I've got a little sort of dog boy here you could have a tennis ball, but it's the same skill that we're using. So we're really keeping our eyes on that ball. We've got our hands up and we're always ready to catch the ball. So again, to start off with nice and easy throws and back into my chest. All the way up, hands up and back into my chest, we can start to go a bit higher and so all the way up and back in. And to finish off with, we can make it even harder. If we start to move around whilst we're catching the ball. So we're adding those two skills together. We've got the movement and we're catching the ball as well. So we'll try that. So I'm walking around and I catch the ball. So side to side, catch it the ball. My hands are ready and I'm catching the ball. So lots of different ways we can practise our catching. So have a try of those. And then we'll move on to our next skill of passing. The last skill of today is passing a rugby ball. I've got a big pink ball here. If your child is visually impaired, that will support them. You could also have a balloon with some rice side. That makes a really good sound. That gives a really good sensory feedback. But anyway, back to our passing, the first thing we're going to do is just to let your child explore the ways in which they could pass the ball, the rupee ball, the tennis ball, and they'll do this in a number of different ways. So really let them explore. So they may choose to throw the ball under . They might have different ways, so they might choose to throw the ball over the top of their heads. So they might have a really big throw like that. They may choose to roll the ball. So they might have the ball there and just roll it along the floor. So they'll initiate lots of different movements and it's an opportunity to be really great, so have some fun with that. After you've tried that for maybe five, even 10 minutes, we'll start to see if we can refine those skills. So how we pass the rugby balls. So we need to make sure that we are facing our target and our body is facing the right way. So I've got my feet pointing in the right direction. My shoulders, my head, I'm looking the right way. And then with a rugby ball, I have my hands at my side and I just start to move them backwards and forwards, a bit like a swing. So I'm going to try and pass after three. So again, we can start to build that anticipation of what's going to happen next. So going to come back, so 1, 2, 3, and pass, and the really important thing there is, I'm letting the ball go right at the top of my movement. So again, it's a chance to really refine those skills. So again, I'm facing in the right direction, my body's facing the right way and getting the idea that our arms are swinging very gently, backwards and forwards. So again, 1. 2. 3 and pass at the top. Again I've release the ball at the top of that movement. So it's a chance to have a go with that refine those skills, experiment, explore those different ways of passing a rugby, and then we'll look forward to building on those skills in our next lesson. Please pause the video to complete your final task. There are a number of ways in which we can make our lesson easier. You could explore rugby through sensory activities. For example, put in rugby balls in trays of soil and water can be really exciting. We could you use larger balls or balloons to practise the skills of passing and catching. To make it harder? You could look at our masterclass and explore top tips from international mixed-ability players and coaches. We can refine our skills, for example, passing by learning the rule of passing backwards. A key point in this is to move forwards and pass the ball backwards. For some more ideas you could ask your parents or carer to search for local opportunities to play or watch rugby. IMART, IMAS and the RFU do some great work here. And finally, you could design your own rugby kit. All of our activities can be adapted by using the step principle and that's by maybe changing the space, looking at the task, using different equipment or thinking about how people could help us to do the activities. Examples of this would be a balloon with beads in to support visually impaired learners. We could use bigger, brighter resources. We could also adapt the space and activities to suit wheelchair users. For example, for a tackle, instead of dropping to the floor, the learners can squeeze into a ball shape in their wheelchair.
